Still deciding whether to take the ACT or the SAT? Here’s what you need to know about their differences so you can make the best choice.

Pick the Right Standardized Test for a Higher Score

Are you getting ready to apply to college but don’t know which standardized test to take? For most colleges, your test results are a requirement, although you can find some schools that don’t require you to take any standardized tests. If you want to get into your dream school, you have to choose the right standardized test to ace it. Learn more about the SAT and the ACT to make a more informed decision.

5 Things You Need to Consider

  1. The contents: There are five sections on the ACT: English, Math, Reading, Science and Reasoning, and an optional essay. On the other hand, the SAT has only four sections: Math, Reading, Writing and Language, and an optional essay.
  2. The duration: You’ll spend around the same time on either test if you choose to write the optional essay.  The ACT can be completed in two hours and 55 minutes, plus 35 more minutes for the essay. The SAT can be finished in three hours and 50 minutes if you answer the essay. You should know that the ACT has more questions than the SAT so you’ll need to go about it faster.
  3. The essay: The essay is optional on both tests, but it’s highly recommended that you complete it.  The ACT’s essay will test your ability to analyze and evaluate a text so you can create an argument. The SAT, on the other hand, tests your reading comprehension.
  4. Science and Math: If your mental math skills are great and you don’t need a calculator, take the SAT. You can’t use a calculator on one of the math sections on the SAT, but you can use it on the ACT. The Science section of the ACT won’t test your scientific knowledge, but your ability to analyze information and think critically.
  5. The Location: There are test centers all over the country. It’s possible that there’s not a center in your town for the test you want. You need to check the test location and decide whether you’re willing to travel or not.
